Eden is described as watered by a river that split into four, and Adam’s job there was to “work it and take care of it” — meaning even paradise involved purposeful work, not idleness. After Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, they were sent out of the garden, and cherubim with a flaming sword were placed at its entrance to guard the way back. Eden’s exact location has never been identified, though the rivers named — including the Tigris and Euphrates — place it somewhere in the ancient Near East.
