How Christianity Took Root in Marlborough

European settlement brought Christian missions to Blenheim and Picton during the 1800s. Anglican missionaries arrived first among Protestant groups, soon followed by Catholic priests and Methodist and Presbyterian ministers, who planted churches for both European settlers and local Māori.

St Joseph’s Catholic

St Joseph’s serves Picton’s Catholic community as part of the broader Te Whetu o Te Moana parish, linking Picton, Blenheim, and surrounding areas. The church building has been a visible town landmark for generations. Recent years have brought discussions about the older structure’s future as the diocese reviews facilities across the region. Mass and sacramental services continue for local parishioners despite these building considerations.
