The Twelve
Jesus chose twelve men to be His closest followers and apprentices, later called apostles (“sent ones”). The list includes fishermen like Peter, James and John, a tax collector named Matthew, and others who would go on to lead the early church after His death and resurrection. You can find the full list in Luke 6:12–16.

An ordinary group
None of the twelve were religious professionals or scholars — they were fishermen, a despised tax collector, and other working men from Galilee. Jesus spent roughly three years training them, and after His resurrection, this same group (minus Judas, who betrayed Him, replaced by Matthias) became the founding leaders of the Christian church, spreading the message across the Roman world.
