Love God with all your heart, soul and mind — and love your neighbour as yourself.
Love God, Love Your Neighbour
When asked which commandment was the greatest, Jesus didn’t pick one from the list of ten — He summarised the entire law in two: love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbour as yourself. He said everything else in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two.
What are the two greatest commandments according to Jesus?
👉 Love God with all your heart, soul and mind — and love your neighbour as yourself.
The whole law in two lines
The first commandment quotes the Shema, the central declaration of Jewish faith recited daily (Deuteronomy 6:5). The second quotes Leviticus 19:18. By pairing them, Jesus wasn’t inventing something new — He was pointing out that love for God and love for others were always meant to be inseparable. It’s this second command that Jesus goes on to illustrate with the parable of the Good Samaritan, when someone asks Him, “And who is my neighbour?”
