In the wilderness, God provided manna — a flaky, bread-like substance that appeared on the ground each morning — and later sent flocks of quail for meat. Together they kept an entire nation fed for 40 years. The story unfolds across Exodus 16 and Numbers 11.

Two different provisions
Manna came first, and came daily — the people ground it, baked it, and ate it as their staple food. Quail came later, after the people complained about having no meat; a wind blew enormous numbers of quail in from the sea, so many that people gathered them for two full days. Both were reminders of the same thing: in a place with no farms and no markets, God was providing directly, one day at a time.
