Sarah (originally named Sarai) was Abraham’s wife and the mother of Isaac. God promised Abraham that his descendants would become a great nation through her, even though she didn’t have a child until she was around 90 years old. Her story runs through Genesis 11–23.

A promise that took decades
God first promised Abraham he’d become the father of a great nation when Abraham was 75 — but Sarah didn’t give birth to Isaac until Abraham was 100. In between, Sarah laughed when she overheard God’s promise repeated, not believing it was possible at her age; when Isaac (“he laughs”) was born, the name became a permanent reminder of that moment. God renamed her from Sarai to Sarah — meaning “princess” — as part of His covenant with Abraham.
