Wisdom & Prophecy 2 Kings Old Testament Medium

Elijah.

Elijah’s Chariot of Fire

The prophet Elijah didn’t die in the usual sense — he was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, with a chariot and horses of fire appearing between him and his successor Elisha. The account is in 2 Kings 2:1–12.

A rare exception

Only two people in the Old Testament are described as never dying — Elijah, and Enoch back in Genesis. Elisha, Elijah’s apprentice, asked for a “double portion” of his spirit before Elijah was taken, and picked up Elijah’s cloak afterward as a sign that his ministry would continue. Elijah’s dramatic departure is also why, centuries later, some expected him to return before the Messiah — a question the Gospels raise directly about John the Baptist.
