Adam, the First Man
Adam was formed by God from the dust of the ground, with life breathed into him, making him the first human being. He’s placed in the Garden of Eden and given the task of naming the animals. The account is in Genesis 2.

Dust and breath
Adam’s name comes from the Hebrew word adamah, meaning “ground” or “earth” — a deliberate wordplay on where he came from. After creating Adam, God recognised it wasn’t good for him to be alone, and created Eve as his companion. The New Testament later draws a direct contrast between Adam and Jesus, calling Jesus the “last Adam” — where the first Adam’s disobedience brought sin into the world, Jesus’s obedience is presented as the reversal of it (Romans 5, 1 Corinthians 15).
