What was Jesus’ first recorded miracle, and where did it happen?
Short Answer = Turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. A celebration, not a sermon, his ministry starts at a party.
Bible Trivia Answer #1
If you ask most people to name one of Jesus’ miracles, they’ll probably say something dramatic: walking on water, healing the sick, or raising the dead.
But Jesus’ very first recorded miracle in the Bible is… surprisingly domestic.
👉 He turned water into wine at a wedding.
And it happened in a small town called Cana, in the region of Galilee.
You can read the full account in John 2:1–11.
A miracle at a wedding?
Yes. Not in a temple. Not in front of a crowd of thousands. Not even during a sermon.
Jesus’ first miracle happens at a wedding celebration.
Mary, Jesus’ mother, tells Him that the hosts have run out of wine — which, in that culture, would have been deeply embarrassing for the family. Jesus instructs the servants to fill six large stone jars with water. When they draw some out, it has become wine — and not just any wine, but exceptionally good wine.
The master of the banquet is surprised that the best wine has been saved for last.
Why this is so interesting?
This is not just Jesus’ first miracle — it’s also one of the most human and relational.
• He’s at a wedding.
• He’s helping a family avoid embarrassment.
• He’s not making a public spectacle.
• And He’s solving a very ordinary, very social problem.
In fact, John’s Gospel tells us this miracle was the moment Jesus first revealed His glory, and His disciples began to put their faith in Him.
“What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.”
