An outsider who became family
As a Moabite, Ruth had no obligation to stay with an Israelite mother-in-law with nothing left to offer her — Naomi even urged her to go back to her own people. Ruth’s decision to stay, and her later marriage to a kinsman named Boaz, wove her into Israel’s story in an unexpected way: she became the great-grandmother of King David, and appears in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel — a foreign widow at the root of Israel’s royal line.
